Firearm Purchase Requirements

North Carolina Firearm Purchase Requirements

Shotgun & Rifle Requirements
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Present a valid, non-expired government-issued Driver's License or Identification Card.
  • Your identification must display your current residential address.
  • A background check through the FBI National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) will be conducted by the licensed firearm dealer on the day of purchase.
Alternative to the NICS Background Check:

If applicable, a valid North Carolina Concealed Carry Permit or a valid North Carolina Pistol Purchase Permit may be accepted in lieu of the FBI NICS background check, subject to state and federal law.
Handgun Requirements

These requirements apply to the purchase of any handgun, including pistols and revolvers. Some firearms that resemble rifles may legally be classified as pistols based on barrel length or stabilizing brace configuration and are subject to these same requirements.

  • Must be 21 years of age or older.
  • Present a valid, non-expired North Carolina Driver's License or North Carolina Identification Card.
  • Your identification must reflect your current residential address.
  • You must possess one of the following:
    • A valid, non-expired North Carolina Concealed Carry Permit.
    • The address listed on the permit must match the address shown on your identification, or you must provide an official change-of-address card issued by your Sheriff's Office.
If you do not possess a North Carolina Concealed Carry Permit:

You may still purchase a handgun after successfully completing a background check through the FBI National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), conducted by the licensed firearm dealer on the day of purchase.
Information is provided for general guidance. Federal and North Carolina firearm laws are subject to change. Please consult your local Sheriff's Office or licensed firearm dealer for the most current requirements.
